The European perch (Perca fluviatilis), also known simply as perch, is a freshwater fish native to Europe and northern Asia. It is a popular species among anglers and is known for its distinctive appearance with dark vertical stripes along its body. Perch are carnivorous and feed on smaller fish, insects, and crustaceans. They are commonly found in lakes, rivers, and ponds with clear water and vegetation. Perch play an important role in the ecosystem as both predator and prey.

I tried to save as many perch as possible from the intermittent stream. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save all of them, as some of the perch were already in a very bad condition due to the poor water quality. Perches have been released into water where they will have many chances to survive. (plenty of oxygen, food, etc.).

In terms of conservation, the European perch population can be affected by factors such as habitat degradation, pollution, and overfishing. It’s important to adhere to fishing regulations and practice responsible angling to help maintain healthy perch populations in their natural habitats.

Soft plastic lures on a jig head

Any beginner who started fishing for predators probably decided to buy soft plastic lures where jig head hooks had already been installed. Because lakes and rivers have different depth, visibility, flow … so here come in handy silicone baits where we choose the weight of the jig head hook. When fishing in deep water we use a heavier jig head hook and vice versa when fishing in shallower ones.

When rigging the jig head hook itself, the advantage is that we can choose the color and shape of the silicone bait. What we can see in fishing shops with ″ ready to fish ″ soft plastic silicones is not that much of a color choice.

I like to fish with heavier jig heads because with them I get longer distances and consequently a greater opportunity to catch fish farther from the shore.

The big advantage with these baits is that they can be used in bottom fishing, mid layer or shallow water fishing.

Below, with photos and description, I have presented a step by step an easy way to rigging soft plastic lures on a jig head hook. There are many different shapes and colors of jig heads available. I chose the ball jig head shape which is also the most commonly used for jig fishing method.

It may seem complicated at first, but with some practice you can do it easily.

  • All you need is the jig head and soft plastic lures you have chosen for jig fishing.

  • For step by step presentation I used Savage Gear Cannibal soft plastic lure (long 15cm and weight 33gr) and ball jig head (weight 25gr and hook size 8/0). You can choose any bait and jig that suits your target fish (perch, zander, pike, walley, trout, bass, catfish, chub, …), the rigging technique is always the same.

  • Lay the jig head on the bait to see where the hook will come through the bait and visualize how the bait will finally look.

  • Place finger on where the hook will come out of the bait (see picture above).

  • Pierce this spot with the tip of the hook (about 2-5 mm, depending on the size of the soft lure and hook). Make sure the hook is in the middle of the lure body.

  • The hook is first pierced through the front of the soft lure (“fish mouth”).

  • Then slowly move the bait forward until I reach the previously marked point.

  • When the hook is in place, slowly move the bait to the final position towards the jig head.

  • Just a little bit.

  • Now the soft lure is ready for fishing.

  • These color combinations are great for winter fishing.

My first fishing reel of Penn was Spinfisher V 4500. I used it for different types of fishing (carp fishing, spinning, float fishing, winter fishing, …). This reel was great for all techniques, never disappointed me (strong, reliable, smooth running).

Unfortunately, an unlucky event happened one night when I went to the night carp fishing with my Penn Spinnfisher V 4500…………………………… 🙁 .

………………………… my older carp bite alarm broke down that night and no longer emitted sound when fish took my bait. So unfortunately i lost my carp fishing rod and my Penn Spinnfisher V 4500 that night when I slept in the tent. With the other fishing rod I just found out of water a lost monofilament (left over from the escaped fish) with fishing hook from my Penn, . Both are probably now in the depths of this lake or maybe some lucky angler caught my lost fishing gear on the hook. Who would know?

After that unlucky event it was necessary to buy another reel. I bought a cheaper reel as my previous Penn from another brand because of mine small budged. However, I was not satisfied whit it, so I finally saved up for a new one Penn Spinnfisher.

A new generation of Penn Spinfisher came on the market this year, and so I decided to buy Penn Spinnfisher VI 4500.
